When Frederick III, known to history as ‘The Pious’, came to Heidelberg in Germany as the new ruler of the Palatinate in 1559 he vowed to go to the Word of God every night for wisdom…Part of the fruit of Frederick’s vow was the Heidelberg Catechism .

The opening question and answer are famous: ‘ What is your only comfort, in life and death ? That I belong – body and soul, in life and death – not to myself but to my faithful Saviour, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins…’

George W. Bethune

Dr George Washington Bethune was born in New York City in 1805. He studied at Princeton Theological Seminary and entered the Reformed Church in America, serving congregations in Rhinebeck , Utica, Philadelphia, Brooklyn Heights and New York City. He also supplied the American Chapel in Rome 1859-60. He died in Florence in 1862.
